Great essay!!! I enjoyed your compare/contrast approach. Those who commit civil disobedience do so with commitment to nonviolence, and with dedication to face the consequences of breaking a law or norm. Thoreau was an excellent writer, but he actually had a pretty short jail stint, with loads of care (from his mom? Aunt?). Still, he faced consequences. The modern rioters often seem misled, uninformed, and unwilling to live in a world of consequences. Often, the protests are overwhelmed with anarchy: no meaning, no rules; only expression; Contemporary art in protest form. Like contemporary art, it lacks soul, and annoys more than it inspires. Perhaps we react with disgust, at some level, to the nihilism and futility behind it rather than the lackadaisical tactics. Maybe not: I'm excited to read more!
Perhaps you should round this essay out by referring to and describing the riotous civil disobedience of the storming/invasion that occurred in Washington on Jan 6th - with the full backing and encouragement of Donald Trump who was still effectively the POTUS.
That would be another good example of a thing that was not civil disobedience - I haven't heard many (if any) people call it that but if they do, they're wrong
Thank you to the helpful commenter who noted that I got the Antigone story exactly inverted, I edited the post to correct that.
Thoughtful, informative and enlightening… heartfelt thanks! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😊
